Castle Douglas is a delightfully busy wee town and only 40 minutes drive from Otter Cottage. The town is known as the Food Town and as such has a great selection of cafes and restaurants that serve fantastic local produce.
There is a good range of quality shops which are well worth a wander around including Interior design, Home Ware, Art Galleries, Arts & Crafts, Gifts, Jewellers, Clothes and Antiques. On the practical side, they have a large Tesco and Wilko store as well as independent bakers, butchers and health store.
Just off the town is Carlingwark Loch which is a beautiful area for walks or a picnic and only a 10 minutes walk away.
Slightly further out on the edge of the town is Threave Garden, House and Estate which is run by the National Trust for Scotland. Further out again stand Threave Castle a 14th century fortress situated on an island in the River Dee.
