The Gem Rock Museum is in Creetown only 10 minutes drive along the A75 from Otter Cottage.
This is a unique family collection of gemstones, crystals, minerals, rocks and fossils. It is a small museum set over 3 rooms, the museum, the gift shop and the cafe but there is a lot packed into this small space.
The look of this place is very old fashioned and could certainly do with modernisation but don’t let it put you off it is still a fascinating collection of British crystals with many other examples from around the world and loads of information should you like the detail.
They run an audio visual presentation on the science behind the creation of minerals, it’s not quite ‘Planet Earth’ but very interesting all the same.
The gift shop has a large selection of silver set jewellery at reasonable prices and a good selection of gifts and collectables.
The Tearoom sells a range of good home baking and is open to none museum visitors.
