Creetown Heritage Museum is a small museum dedicated to the life and work of the people of Creetown throughout the 20th century. It’s predominantly photographs, several hundred on display and loads more hidden way, and the staff are very knowledgeable and extremely happy to talk you through this towns interesting history. There are also a number of artefacts to help tell their story over the past 150 years.
This industrial town was once famous for its granite quarries and it supplied all the granite for the building of the Liverpool docks and London Bridge. At one time it was the wealthiest of all the towns in the area however today it is a sleepy wee town with no obvious indicators to its former glory.
The cult film ‘The Wicker Man’ staring Christoper Lee was partly filmed in Creetown and there is a whole section including a large wicker model dedicated the making of the film.
You can find out opening times and more about the museum and the area from their website
The museum also has film footage and audio presentations on both red squirrels and peregrine falcons as these animals nest in this area and the local nature reserve. Balloch Woods has a nice short walk although it can be a bit boggy underfoot in the wet weather. You can follow the route from Walk Highlands HERE.
