Gatehouse of Fleet is a 25 minute drive from Otter Cottage. The main tourist attraction is The Mill on the Fleet which is an old 18th century cotton mill. The entrance is a cast iron archway next to the church, opposite the main visitors car park but you could be forgiven for missing this. You will find the Gatehouse Tourist Information Centre here as well as a large heritage exhibition, a cafe and a second-hand bookshop.

There is also a gift shop and cafe next to the carpark and a cafe come craft shop in the old church.

If you are looking for a meal there are 4 hotels on the High Street each competing better than the next to offer a great selection of food.

At the very start of Gatehouse just as you turn off the A75 first on the left is the entrance to Cardoness Castle which is an old Scottish tower house from the 15th century. Although this is a ruin you can still climb the stairs to the battlement and the views over Fleet Bay and the Solway Firth are just amazing.
