Portpatrick is very attractive little fishing village just 45 minute drive from Otter Cottage. The main feature is its delightful little harbour where everyone flocks to on a beautiful day. There are several hotels along the front that offer good food and drink. There are two gift shops The Smugglers Cove and the Lighthouse Pottery both of which are worth a browse.
There are good cliff top walks to either side of the harbour. To your left facing the sea, there are steep steps taking you round the coast to Dunskey Castle a 14th century ruin which is perched on the cliff top and you can walk further on to beautiful Morroch Bay. To the right, again up steep steps past the large white Portpatrick Hotel will take you onto the start of the Southern Upland Way and a lovely walk past the golf course with fantastic views over the harbour and the stunning coastline. The Southern Upland Way is a cross country walk from Portpatrick to Cocksburnpath on the east coast of Scotland approximately 240 miles.
